Roundtown Boys' National School was founded on November 5th. 1866 to meet the demands for education from the local people of Terenure. On its opening the school had 174 boys with 3 teachers.

Alderman Bernard Butler Lord Mayor of Dublin
He was the Principal Teacher in St. Joseph's BNS for 30 years. His wife Annie was Vice-Principal of the school.
He was a member of Dáil Éireann from 1943 until his death.
He was Lord Mayor of Dublin 1953/ 1954.

The name of the school changed in 1918.
It acquired the Roman Catholic denominational ethos which still prevails today. The school
was rebuilt in 1972 - '73.
St. Joseph's today has 560 pupils and 24 teachers. We have two of each class from Junior
Infants to 6th. class.
The principal of the school is Mr. Matt Hume.
